In the Elite Dangerous: Beyond – Chapter 4 update, a new feature has been implemented which will save your bindings. (Woohoo!)
However, just to be extra safe, we would still recommend that you back up your custom bindings file in order to prevent the possibility of losing any custom binds you may have. If you are unaware of how to do this, please refer to the following directions:
The first thing you need to do is locate where your bindings have been saved. Navigate to the following location:
C:\users\%username%\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Bindings
Please bear in mind that the AppData folder is hidden by default. To reveal this click on the View tab and ensure that the Hidden box is checked.
Next, all you need to do is COPY the Bindings folder to a safe location of your preference.
Once the Elite Dangerous: Beyond - Chapter Four download has completed, proceed to start the game as usual and test whether your custom bindings are still intact and working as should be. If your custom bindings are unfortunately wiped for any reason, you now have a copy of the custom file to restore them.
If you do need to utilise your backup file, it is easy to implement them back into the game. To do this, take the backed up copy of your Bindings folder, as shown above, navigate back to the binding’s location once again, and paste the folder in order to overwrite the current bindings. Once this is done, your custom bindings should be available to you in the game.
