What is the BGS and how does it work?
The background simulation involves the changing of influence and states across the game's systems, which can be directly affected by player actions.
The game's many factions can involve themselves in struggles with each other, or plan to expand to other systems, and the player can aid the faction with their plans, or hinder them.
There are different ways players can affect the BGS, they include:
Combat - Through either completing missions, participating in bounty hunting, or committing crimes.
Trading - Selling or buying goods within the system where you're trying to affect faction influence, this can also include selling Exploration Data.
When a player completes an action, it is converted into an influence hit for one or more factions within a system.
Influence within a system will always add up to 100% and changes can sometimes be unpredictable due to the ever-changing nature of the system.
Whichever faction controls the main starport in a system, is considered the system controller overall.
What are the states a system can be in?
State changes work differently to how influence is calculated. The system's state will mirror the controlling faction's state which in turn, can be modified based on the type of actions that are being taken. If there is a large volume of profitable trades going through a system, it could enter a boom state due to being temporarily flush with cash.
Alternatively, if there is a significant lack of vital commodities, a system may instead enter a state of famine.
Here is a table of the different states a system can find itself in depending on said player action:
|Expansion||A minor faction has seen a huge growth in influence and is now in the process of expanding to another star-system.|
|War||There is a conflict between two minor factions.|
|Civil War||Two minor factions from the same system are in conflict.|
|Election||Two minor factions with the same government type are in peaceful conflict.|
|Boom||This minor faction has been doing exceptionally good economically.|
|Bust||This minor faction faces economical hardship.|
|Civil Unrest||The followers of this faction are not amused about the security their faction provides.|
|Famine||This faction is in dire need of food.|
|Outbreak||This faction is in dire need of medicine.|
|Lockdown||This faction failed to uphold law and order.|
